Real Time Credit Card Processing
RTP requires a merchant account and an online payment gateway that connects your cart to the merchant account. RTP allows your customer to pay with a credit card and have that tansaction processed immediately. Their card is charged and you are credited with the sale at once. Typical fee include a monthly statement fee (average $10) a monthly gateway fee (Around $10), a percentage of the sale (from 1-3% depending on your merchant account provider) and a transaction fee (typically .25 - .35 cents per transation on top of the percent fee. The bottom line is RTP will probably cost you $20 per month and about $3.00 per $100 transaction. Additionally the merchant account provider will typically charge a minimum use fee of around $25 per month. This means that unless you produce $25 in processing fees you will be charged the difference. They will make a minimum of $25 per month from you regardless - on top of the statement and gatway fees. E.G. You have 7 sales and sell $500 worth of merchandise in a month, your rate is 2.5% and .35 per transaction. Your $500 in sales would generate percent fees of $15 ($500 x 3%) and transaction fees of $2.45 (7 transactions x .35 cents) for a total of $17.45 in processing fees. Your minimum use fee is $25, so you subtract $17.45 from $25 which leaves a balance of $7.55 you will be charged for in minimum use fees. You would need to sell around $800 per month to avoid additional minimum use fees.
E-Commerce Requires Encryption Security
To legally process personal financial information online you must have an secure encrypted connection. This is called SSL Encryption. An SSL security certificate must be purchased and installed in your shopping system. WVIS provides both a generic server certificate option (less expensive - $75 per year) and a private certificate option ($100 per year with a $100 first time installation fee).
PayPal is a vialble option for processing credit cards without the monthly expense of a merchant account. PayPal transaction are about 2.5% and $ .25 a transaction, but they have no monthly fees or minimum use fees. Additionally PayPal takes all major credit cards while a typical merchant account will only take Mastercard and Visa without additional cost for the other cards. PayPal can also be used to sell a few products with a BUY NOW or ADD TO CART button. It can also be used for donations, subscriptions or any other payment.
